Who we are
DRAMATURGIA MEXICANA is a civil initiative organization that links national dramatists with those interested in reading, staging, translating or investigating a play produced in our country. This web site is an instrument where people around the world get to know the authors, download scripts and get in contact with them.
The members of this collective are integrated by the list of authors in the site. An Editorial Committee is renewed every year by means of vote.
Any Mexican dramatist can join. The only requisite is to have produced and published a play.
We glimpse that Mexican dramaturgy is passing through a moment of rich diversity, great production and quality of composition, generating sublime works of the highest value over the past 7 years that had been well received in local and international forums, awards, editions and stages. But above all, it had encountered a receptive audience to their proposals.
The content of the texts and biography is the responsibility of each and every author. DramaturgiaMexicana.com suggests dramatists to register their play at INDAUTOR, SOGEM or the respective institution that can protect the author rights, before uploading any script to this site. DramaturgiaMexicana.com is not responsible for the reproduction, impression, public reading, partial or total staging of a play. The site is just a medium to promote Mexican plays and a tool to get in contact with the authors.
HISTORY BRIEFING
In 2006 Luis Mario Moncada, who was the director of Centro Cultural Helénico (Hellenic Cultural Center) at that time, started the initiative after presenting the cycle 'Mexican Arena' at the Royal Court in London, dedicated to young Mexican dramaturgy. He decided to summon authors to organize and launch an internet site that will spread the work of national playwrighter.
A great effort was made to find as many living dramatists as possible that had at least one published, produced or awarded play. Each of them was asked to send biography, play synopsis, publications, articles, essays, reviews and images of them and their plays. This became the first compilation, offering a general panorama of the scenic art work of Mexican authors.
During the first year, 2006, the editorial committee was composed of Luis Mario Moncada, Edgar Chias and Bárbara Colio. They structured the data base and made a first call for material with close fellow playwrighter, integrating the first stage of the site. Elizabeth Zárate was named site manager, a position she held until 2010.
The second editorial committee headed both 2007 and 2008. Members Estela Leñero, Daniel Serrano and Mario Cantú task was to find an improved and self financed hosting solution to extend the site's capabilities, after making a second call for dramatists.
In 2009, Carlos Nóhpal, Alberto Castillo and Conchi León secure the exposure of the site in the Feria del Libro Teatral (Theater Book Fair), making a massive user registration and organizing a round table about the 10 most influential dramatists in Mexico. An agreement was also made with CITRU, through Rodolfo Obregon, to publish masterpiece plays and biographies from the great authors that are now part of our history in the section Genealogy.
During 2010 Hugo Abraham Wirth, Ivan Olivares and Martin Brie duty was to redesign the site to make it more accessible to users, make authors edit their own information and include Genealogy coordinated with CITRU. Diffusion efforts were made to include links in international dramatists' sites, as well as the translation to French and English language.
DRAMATURGIA MEXICANA has become a reference of modern Mexican theater and has been intended to be an exposition of national play writes. To date this site holds seventy eight active dramatists and five important masters that belongs to Mexican theater history. To enrich this range of theatrical writing, the portal includes a Billboard of current productions from these playwrighter all around the world.
